A police officer who was arrested on a charge of rape, was found dead in his jail cell in an apparent suicide, police in Missouri said.

Gasconade County police officer Marty L. Rainey, 43, who forced numerous women and girls to have sex with him, was found dead in the Ste. Genevieve County jail on Saturday morning.

According to the police investigation, it appears that Rainey committed suicide.

Rainey was charged with one count of inciting a minor to engage in a commercial sex act and four counts of deprivation of rights under color of law.

He was also charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of corruption by a public servant.

Since one of the women was a girl under the age of 17, he was charged with statutory rape and the use of a child in a sexual performance.

He was denied bail. Rainey threatened or coerced six women to have sex with him, a friend, or both, sometimes while in uniform.

Other women said that Rainey tried to force them or forced them to undress so he could photograph their private parts.
