A nurse was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly killing numerous patients at a hospital by injecting them with a lethal amount of drugs, police in Italy said.

Tuscany police said that they have arrested 55-year-old Fausta Bonino, after she was accused of killing at least 13 of her patients at the hospital.

The woman was charged with 13 counts of murder. She was booked into jail, and was denied bail. According to the police investigation, the woman worked in the anesthesia and intensive care departments of the hospital.

After an unusual number of patients died last year, police launched an investigation, fearing that there might be a killer in the hospital ward.

As agents were observing the suspect, they noticed the nurse injecting a lethal amount of blood thinner medication in a patient. Police said that the suspect was monitored for several months.

The victims were mainly elderly people who suffered from various illnesses.
