(Scroll down for video) A homeowner was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly killing an intruder who was inside his daughter’s bedroom, police in Australia said.
Hamilton police said that they have arrested 33-year-old Benjamin Batterham, after being accused of killing 34-year-old Richard James Slater, who was accused of breaking into the suspect’s home.
Batterham was charged with one count of murder. According to the police investigation, Batterham found Slater inside his 1-year-old daughter’s bedroom around 3:30 a.m.
Batterham confronted the burglar and called his 32-year-old friend for help. Neighbors were awakened by the sound of loud noise and people arguing.
They called the police who arrived at the scene and found Slater seriously injured. Slater was treated by ambulance paramedics and taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Batterham was treated in a hospital for facial injuries.
Batterham was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm. Around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Slater was taken off life support.
A few hours later, Batterham was charged with murder.
Neighborhood residents slammed the prosecutor’s decision to charge Batterham with murder. They called for his immediate release from prison.
