Police are looking to arrest those responsible for the beating of
a gay man who kissed his boyfriend at a Burger King, police in Florida said.
Miami police said that they received a complaint from 25-year-old Jordan Schaeffer of Los Angeles, California, saying that he was beat up at the Burger King located at 1101 Washington Avenue, after kissing his boyfriend, 25-year-old Eric Danko.
The beating lasted several minutes, and nobody stepped in to help. The couple said that they were surprised by the beating as they thought that gays were accepted in Miami Beach.
Surveillance video shows a man wearing flip-flops confronting Schaeffer and then hurling insults at the couple. There were other customers and children present at the time of the incident.
Schaeffer said that the man, who was not identified, was clearly intoxicated and was looking for a fight. Two other men joined in the fight as bystanders watched.
The couple hired an attorney who claimed that a hate crime was perpetrated against Schaeffer because of his sexual orientation.
Police urged anyone with information to come forward. So far, no arrests have been made.
