(Scroll down for video) Police launched an investigation after a man knocked himself unconscious by falling off a fire truck that responded to an emergency, police in Australia said.

The Melbourne Fire Department said that around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, firefighters were speeding down Victoria Street, on the way to a fire.

Suddenly, the man, who was not identified, ran in front of the fire truck and refused to move. He then forcibly pulled off a wiper blade.

The man then hit the windshield several times with the wiper blade. The fire truck moved around the man, and sped to the scene of the fire.

When the fire truck returned to the station, firefighters saw the same man lying on the hood of a car on Victoria Street. They stopped to check on him.

The man then renewed his attack and climbed onto the roof of the fire truck. Firefighters returned to the truck and locked the doors.

The man then slipped from the fire truck and fell headfirst onto the ground, knocking himself unconscious. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

So far, no charges have been filed as the man is in critical condition.
