A father was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly locking his children into a plastic storage box, causing his son to die due to lack of oxygen, police in Japan said.

Ikoma police said that they have arrested 39-year-old Yusuke Inoue, after being accused of pushing his 2 and 3-year-old children into the plastic box as a form of discipline.

Inoue was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

According to the police investigation, Inoue forced his 2-year-old son Yukiya and 3-year-old daughter into the plastic box around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

After about 20 minutes, Inoue realized that Yukiya was not breathing. He took his children out of the box and called an ambulance.

The mother of the children was in the kitchen at the time of the incident. The children were taken to a hospital, where Yukiya was pronounced dead.

He died as result of lack of oxygen. The girl was not injured.

Inoue told police that he had placed the children in the box to discipline them because they were loud in the living room and kicked the TV.
