A woman was arrested on a charge of extortion after allegedly stealing her friend’s cat and threatening to harm it if she is not given money, police in Florida said.
Gainesville police said that they have arrested 22-year-old Madeleine Joan Kaye, after being accused of sending threatening messages to her friend in exchange for the return of her cat.
Kaye was charged with one count of extortion threats.
According to the police investigation, the owner of the cat posted notices that her gray kitten went missing and she asked the public to help her find her pet.
On Thursday, Kaye sent the woman several text messages, saying that she had the cat and was willing to return it for $20.
Kaye also threatened to do something bad to the cat if she is not given money. The woman called the police who spoke with Kaye in order to convince her to return the cat.
Kaye denied having any knowledge about the cat. After being arrested, Kaye admitted to sending the text messages while drinking with friends.
She said that the messages were part of a prank, and she does not know what happened to the cat.
