(Scroll down for video) A woman was found guilty of defamation after writing on Facebook that her neighbor is a pedophile, according to court documents in Canada.
Katherine Van Nes of British Columbia, was ordered to pay $67,500 to her neighbor Douglas Pritchard, who is a music teacher at a middle school, after she wrote on Facebook that he is a pedophile.
The court heard that the neighbors began to fight after Pritchard told Van Nes to shut down her newly built water fountain because it made too much noise during the night and it disrupted his wife’s sleep.
Van Nes ignored his request. Pritchard and his wife were advised to install security cameras on the property to document their neighbor’s unruly behavior.
When Van Nes saw the cameras she wrote on Facebook that Pritchard is a pedophile who uses cameras to spy on children.
A member of the community saw the Facebook post and told the principal of the school where Pritchard worked. The court heard that the accusation destroyed the reputation and career of the teacher.
Van Nes was ordered to give Pritchard $50,000 in general damages, $15,000 in punitive damages and $2,500 for making too much noise at night.
The judge also ordered Van Nes to turn off the water fountain between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
