(Scroll down for video) Police launched an investigation after a retired officer pulled out his licensed gun and accidentally shot himself and the podiatrist who treated him, police in New York said.

On Wednesday morning, the 77-year-old former NYPD police officer, who was not identified, visited the office of Dr. Matthew Nester, 46, of Long Island.

As the officer was making himself comfortable in the doctor's office, he pulled out his weapon and it accidentally discharged.

The bullet pierced his leg and then hit the foot of the podiatrist. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment after suffering injuries that were not considered life threatening.

At this point, police do not believe that they will file criminal charges against the retired officer.
