Tallapoosa County police arrested Alexander City Mayor Charles Shaw and his wife, Lavern, after being accused of beating Councilman Tony Goss on Monday night.

Both were charged with one count of third-degree assault.

They were booked into the country jail, and bail was set at $1,000 each.

According to witnesses at the scene, immediately after the council meeting, Shaw went to where Goss stood and punched him in the side of the face.

Goss stepped back while trying to defend himself. Several city employees tried to break up the fight. Police chief Willie Robinson grabbed Goss and held him while a second officer put Shaw in a headlock to keep them apart.

Goss said that Shaw’s wife joined the fight and kicked him, while others tried to separate them. Both Goss and Shaw were treated at the Russell Medical Center.

The council meeting was called to discuss the firing of the city's finance director, Sandra Machen.
