A man was arrested on a charge of criminal damage after allegedly toppling a 126-year-old statue of a 16th century king, police in Portugal said.

Lisbon police arrested the man, who was not identified, after trying to take a selfie with the statue of King Dom Sebastiao, causing it to fall and break into pieces.

He was charged with one count of criminal damage.

According to the police investigation, the suspect was at the Rossio Railway Station around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, when he decided to climb onto the pedestal of the statue in order to take a selfie.

However, the statue could not carry the man’s weight, and it toppled. The statue fell to the ground and broke into pieces.

The suspect tried to flee from the scene, but police officers chased after him and he was arrested.
