The baby’s step-grandmother was found guilty in connection with the death.
Kimiko Hardy, 38, of Dayton, Ohio, was found guilty of six charges after her dog fatally mauled her seven-month-old step-grandson, Johnathan Quarles Jr.
Quarles was visiting Hardy in Indiana, where he died from multiple blunt force trauma.
He was killed after being attacked by Hardy’s pit bull mix named Busa.
Prosecutors said that Busa crushed the baby’s skull and ripped out part of his scalp in Hardy’s home.
Hardy, who had worked as a nursing assistant, was bitten by her dog during the incident.
Hardy was arrested after investigators learned that she knew the dog was dangerous. The dog had attacked a postal worker, causing the postal service to refuse delivery to her address.
The dog also attacked another dog while it was walking with its owner opposite Hardy’s house.
After the second incident, Hardy was ordered to attend a 2 and a half hour training class at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center on responsible dog ownership, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The prosecutors told the jury that this tragic death of the 7-month-old baby could have easily been avoided. After Quarles’ death, the dog was seized and euthanized.
Hardy now faces a maximum of 11 years in prison.
