(Scroll down for video) A homeless shelter in Canada, announced that it is giving away free wine to alcoholics in order to keep them in the facility for longer periods.
The Oaks Residence in Ottawa, provides support for chronic alcoholics, giving them a glass of wine every hour every day.
This may seem counterproductive, but meeting the immediate needs of these individuals allows them to then focus on medical and mental health support, a spokesperson for the shelter said.
Most alcoholics are very dependent on alcohol, and that is their most basic need.
If that need is not met, nothing else matters to them, but once that need is met, they can start looking at other parts of their lives.
The shelter explained that the program is similar to drug addicts who are given heroin under supervision of a nurse who can regulate the intake, prevent fatal overdose, and offer people battling addiction social services and drug treatment programs.
About one in five homeless people have a chronic substance abuse disorder, and about the same proportion struggle with mental health.
In addition to housing, residents get 24 hours of personal support, and a nurse is on site for 40 hours a week.
