University of Iowa Police arrested 22-year-old Ashley R. Hautzenrader of Davenport, after giving birth at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and leaving the baby in a garbage can.

Hautzenrader was charged with one count of child endangerment. If convicted, she faces up to two years in prison.

She was booked into the Johnson County Jail, and was released without bail.

According to the police investigation, around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, Hautzenrader walked into the hospital, but she did not know that she was pregnant.

She entered the bathroom, and after giving birth, she tried to flush the baby down the toilet. After being unsuccessful, Hautzenrader put the baby in a pillowcase and dropped them in the trash.

She cleaned up the bathroom and left. The baby was found alive by employees of the hospital shortly after the birth.
