A school was forced to give teachers courses on being sensitive to transgender people after a teacher complained of harassment.

The fifth-grade teacher at Hall Elementary School in Oregon, came out as transgender after surviving breast cancer.

Leo Soell, who does not identity as a man or a woman, but is gender neutral, filed complaints with the school over harassment from other teachers.

The school hosted an hour-long training on transgender issues. However, according to Soell, the harassment continued as coworkers continuously called Soell “she,” “lady,” or “Miss Soell.”

School officials said that an investigation found no proof of harassment. However, the Gresham-Barlow School District agreed to settle the matter and agreed to give Soell $60,000.

In addition to the money, the district will add gender-neutral bathrooms to all schools, create clear policies about transgender teachers and host mandatory trainings for all staff members.
