A man was rushed to a psychiatric hospital after allegedly trying to open a planed door during a flight from Germany to Canada.

Lufthansa flight LH476 from Munich to Vancouver was diverted to Hamburg, in order to get the man to the hospital for treatment.

Hamburg police confirmed that a rescue team, including a doctor, diagnosed the man with a mental disorder. He was taken to a psychiatric facility, and no charges will be filed.

Passengers on the plane told investigators that the man, who was not identified, sat in the back of the plane screaming and shouting.

He then tried to open the back door of the aircraft at 38,000 feet because he wanted to smoke a cigarette outside. He was restrained by passengers until the captain landed the plane in Hamburg.

The flight arrived at its destination three hours late.
