When he returned, Dejean-Jones accidentally went to the third floor instead of his girlfriend’s apartment on the fourth floor.
When he found the door locked, he knocked on it and on the bedroom door, but when he did not get an answer, Dejean-Jones attempted to kick the door in.
When the homeowner awoke and realized that someone was trying to break into his home, he grabbed his gun and shot the intruder.
Dejean-Jones was shot in the abdomen. He managed to get out of the building, where he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, but he died of his injuries.
