Professional swimmer drowns during lifeguard test

(Scroll down for video) A young professional swimmer died after drowning while participating in a fitness test for lifeguards at the Pilgrim Lake in Orleans, Massachusetts.

Police said that 22-year-old Jack Jakubek, went underwater and did not surface while trying to swim with special equipment used during lifeguard fitness tests.

Several rescue teams responded to the scene, including a dive team, the Massachusetts State Police and the Coast Guard of the United States.

Jakubet found off the coast by divers around 9:23 a.m. on Saturday, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Jakubek was transported to the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was pronounced dead.

Jakubek had graduated from SUNY Cortland two weeks before his death. Jakubek was the captain of the swim team at SUNY Cortland.

Friends praised his swimming skills, saying that he was a very good swimmer in high school and during his four years at Cortland.

After graduation, Jakubek had hoped to return to Cape Cod to work as a lifeguard, but he drowned during the test.
