41-year-old Aitabdel Salem of Queens, was arrested after assaulting a police officer.
His original bail was set at $25,000 and since he could not afford it, he stayed in Rikers Island. However, after the assault charge was dismissed, the court reduced his bail to just $2.
Salem remained in jail for another five months because his lawyer forgot to tell him that his bail was reduced to just $2.
Salem was charged with tampering and mischief in an unrelated case. He was accused of disabling a Metro Card machine at a train station.
