(Scroll down for video) A police officer was placed on leave after a baby died in his car.
Police officer Mark Fanfarillo may also face charges in connection with the death of his four-month-old son.
Michael Fanfarillo died after being left in the officer's car for an extended period of time.
The officer had parked his car at his home and went inside, but left his young son in the car. The baby boy died after he was left in the hot car with temperatures over 80 degrees.
The baby was found at about 4:40 p.m. He was taken to Rome City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Mark Fanfarillo has been a police officer in Rome, New York, for 10 years.
It is unclear how long the child has been in the car or how it came about that the officer left his son in the car.
The Rome police department handed over the investigation to another police department.
Someone had opened a Go Fund Me page for baby Michael, and they received over $2,600.
The child's parents were described as the “kindest people in the city and they bend over backwards for anyone that they know.”
However, the creator of the fundraiser later announced that she is removing the page. “By the request of the family, I will be taking the page down. I am saddened, but need to respect their wishes.
“They wish to refund the donations, and are very overwhelmed and appreciative of the support they have received. I am so sorry & God bless.”
