A worker in Florida, tragically lost his life after being crushed by a mountain of mushrooms, according to police.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said that 45-year-old Bruce Edward Stephenson Jr., Tavares, died as he was moving around boxes of mushrooms with a forklift.
The incident unfolded on Monday, at the Monterey Mushrooms Inc. plant in Zellwood. At some point, Stephenson noticed that pallets of mushrooms were swaying to the side.
He jumped out of the forklift, but the mushrooms tipped over and fell on top of him. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Last year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration gave the company a fine of $6,000 because employees were at risk of dying by climbing on mushrooms at a height of up to 8 feet.
Inspectors came to the scene after a worker filed a safety complaint regarding a forklift.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said that it has been receiving complaints about Monterey Mushrooms for years.
