(Scroll down for video) A mountain lion was shot dead by police officers after it attacked a young boy and ate his face, according to police in Colorado.

The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office said that the father of the 5-year-old boy, who was not identified, called the police after seeing the lion biting his child’s face and neck.

The incident unfolded on Friday, outside the boy’s home. The boy's mother told investigators that she heard screams and ran out of the house, where she saw the lion on top of her son.

The woman was able to physically remove the lion off her son while the child's father called 911. The father took his son to a nearby hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said that the boy suffered injuries to his face, head and neck, and he is in good condition. The boy’s mother was also admitted to the hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her hands and legs.

Police officers who arrived at the scene, found the lion in the front yard of the residence, where they shot and killed it.

Police are still searching for a second mountain lion after witnesses said two lions were seen in the area before the attack.
