(Scroll down for video) A police officer was arrested on a charge of manslaughter after allegedly mowing down a group of people with his car, according to police in New York.
The New York Police Department said that they have arrested 28-year-old Nicholas Batka of Brooklyn, after driving drunk, killing a pedestrian and injuring several others.
Batka was charged with manslaughter, assault and driving while intoxicated. He was also suspended without pay. He was booked into jail, and his bail was set at $300,000.
According to the police investigation, Batka was driving west on North 8th Street in Williamsburg around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, when his car jumped the curb on Bedford Avenue.
Batka was scheduled to start his shift at 7:00 a.m. He hit a group of friends. A 21-year-old man who was hit by the 2012 Dodge Durango, was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
Two women, 22 and 23 years old, remain in the hospital in stable condition. Another victim is said to be in critical condition.
Batka was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released. Batka joined the New York Police Department last year, and he was assigned to the Transit Borough Manhattan Task Force.
