24-year-old Joanna Birriel, who moved to the country from Argentina to be closer to her boyfriend, was killed when a prisoner threw a grenade at Byron Lima.
Lima had been serving a 20 year sentence for killing popular Bishop Juan Jose Gerardi, who was an opponent of the military regime.

According to the police investigation, Lima was killed by a rival gang in prison. Lima was an army captain, and has been one of the most powerful inmates in the prison system.
Trouble started for Lima, when he banned a rival gang from selling drugs in the prison where he was serving his sentence.
The riot occurred at the Granja Pavon Prison. 13 prisoners were killed as a result of the riot and four were decapitated.
