(Scroll down for video) A man who wants to legalize killing mentally disabled people, broke into a mental health facility and stabbed 44 people as they slept, according to police in Japan.
Sagamihara police said that they have arrested 26-year-old Satoshi Uematsu, after being accused of killing 19 mentally disabled patients and wounded 25 others.
Uematsu has been charged with numerous counts of murder, attempted murder and assault. According to the police investigation, Uematsu used to work at the Tsukui Yamayuri-En mental health facility.
Before the attack, Uematsu boasted that he could kill 470 people with disabilities in the facility during the night.
Uematsu wanted to legalize euthanasia for mentally disturbed patients who are not able to live at home and be active in society.
He also urged lawmakers and wrote letters to them, seeking their help. Several months ago, Uematsu was committed to a hospital after he expressed a willingness to kill people with severe disabilities.
He was released in March, after a doctor felt he had improved.
Uematsu lived near the mental health facility, and was described as an educated man who always greeted people with a smile.
He told police that he stabbed the victims because he wanted the mentally disabled to disappear.
