A man was arrested on a charge of sexual assault after allegedly sexually assaulting a little girl in a park, according to police in New York.

The New York Police Department said that they have arrested 24-year-old Soloman Hudgins of Queens, after being accused of robbing and sexually assaulting the 12-year-old girl before dropping his wallet, which contained his ID.

Hudgins was charged with first-degree sexual abuse, third-degree robbery and endangering the welfare of a child.

If convicted, Hudgins faces up to seven years in prison. He was booked into jail, pending a bail hearing.

According to the police investigation, the 12-year-old girl had left her residence to meet up with friends during the early morning hours of Wednesday.

When she arrived at the intersection of Bowne Street and Sanford Avenue, she was jumped from behind by a stranger who pulled her to the ground.

As she tried to push him away and yell for help, he pulled at her clothing, opened her shorts and sexually abused her.

As she attempted to use her iPhone to call for help, the stranger pulled her shoes off, grabbed her iPhone and earbuds out of her hand, and took two packs of cigarettes, one of which contained a lighter, before fleeing the scene.

In the process, the stranger dropped his wallet, which the victim found and brought to police. The wallet contained documents identifying the stranger as Hudgins.
