A woman was arrested on a charge of stalking after harassing the mother of a murdered child by claiming to be her son’s ghost on Twitter, according to police in the United Kingdom.
Now, 20-year-old Chloe Cowan of Margate, has been sentenced to serve three years in prison after pleading guilty to stalking involving serious alarm or distress.
She was also given a restraining order, prohibiting her from making any contact, either directly or indirectly, with the parents of James Bulger or any of their family members indefinitely.
In addition, she was banned for 10 years from using any device with Internet capability without it being able to store the history of its use.
Cowan targeted and tormented the mother of James with messages about the murder of her young son. For months, Cowan sent cruel tweets, which included her posing as one of Bulger’s killers, and as James’ ghost.
The 2-year-old boy was tortured and killed by 10-year-old Jon Venables and 10-year-old Robert Thompson, in Liverpool, 23 years ago.
Bulger’s parents, 47-year-old Denise Fergus and 40-year-old Stuart Fergus, said that they received numerous messages on Twitter from Cowan, over a period of many months, causing a disruption in their lives.
