(Scroll down for video) A mother left her two young sons home alone while she went to help her neighbor.

When she returned home, one of her sons was dead.

Police in New Orleans, Louisiana, said that the mother, Generra Brown, 29, was getting paid to take care of an elderly woman, who lives across the street from her home.

Brown left her two sons home alone while attending to the needs of the elderly neighbor.

Meanwhile, the two boys, who are 5 and 9 years old, were playing in a closet. They came across a semi-automatic handgun, police said.

The 9-year-old boy took the gun and began playing with it. The gun accidentally fired a shot and 5-year-old Melvin Brady, was hit in the face.

The 9-year-old boy then ran to tell his mother what happened. She called police, who found the boy in the closet next to the hand gun. Brady was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Commander John Fortunato said that the incident took place at 6:30 p.m. Brown received a summons to appear in court on charges of child desertion.
