(Scroll down for video) Authorities are investigating what caused the floor of a restaurant to open up and swallow three women.

The terrible ordeal took place at the Church's Chicken in Livingston, Texas.

Firefighters were called after the floor collapsed in the kitchen of the restaurant, and three workers fell inside. Livingston Fire Chief Corky Cochran estimated that the women fell about three and a half to four feet down.

However, that was not all. The kitchen was in total disarray and hot liquid spilled over women, leaving them with severe burns.

The incident took place at about 6:00 p.m., while customers were ordering food. They heard screams from the restaurant’s kitchen.

Customers ran to help the victims until firefighters arrived.

Two of the women were pulled to safety, but the third worker was trapped between appliances. Witnesses said that her body was “literally cooking” in the grease. She suffered burns to 75 percent of her body.

All three women were rushed to the Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston, where they were listed in critical condition.

The women were identified as Erica Acevedo, 26, Hugolina Guerrero, and Montserrat Damian.
