A father and a religious leader were arrested after a 6-year-old girl was forced into a marriage in exchange for food, police in Afghanistan said.

Ghor police said that they have arrested 55-year-old Seyed Abdolkarim, who is a mulleh, after being accused of marrying 6-year-old Gharibgol.

The father was also arrested after accepting a goat, rice, tea, sugar and oil in exchange for forcing his daughter to marry Abdolkarim.

It is illegal to marry a girl under the age of 16.

The crime came to light after Abdolkarim left his town to live in another city with the little girl.

At first, neighbors believed that Gharibgol was Abdolkarim’s daughter, but after they saw him undressing the girl, they realized that she was his wife.

When Abdolkarim was confronted, he admitted to buying the 6-year-old girl and marrying her.

Neighbors immediately called the police and the girl was returned to her mother.

During questioning, the father defended his actions to police, saying that he had no food to feed his children and was forced to sell his daughter.
