A father has abandoned his young son during his attempt to escape from police.

Jerry McCabe, 27, of Dania Beach, Florida, was pulled over by police.

During the traffic stop, he grabbed his 5-year-old son and ran from his car. However, he ditched his son when the boy was unable to keep up with him.

According to police, McCabe was driving a black Dodge Charger while not wearing a seat belt. He also did not have a valid driver’s license.

When an officer tried to stop him, he led him on a high speed chase. When two of McCabe’s tires blew, he grabbed his son and fled on foot.

Police said that the officer was behind the father and son, and ordered them to stop, but they kept running. During the chase, the officer heard the father screaming at his 5-year-old son to keep up with him.

When the boy was too exhausted to run fast, McCabe left him behind and he jumped over a fence.

The officer stayed behind with the child until a security guard from a nearby building agreed to watch the boy. The officer then pursued the father.

McCabe later surrendered to police. He now faces multiple charges, including child abuse and child negligence.
