Salez police said that the incident unfolded on Saturday around 2:15 p.m., on the train route between Buchs and Sennwald.

A total of seven people were injured, some seriously. There are still five people in the hospital, where they are being treated for stab wounds and burns.

Doctors said that a 34-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl are in serious condition. A 6-year-old child suffered severe injuries, but is now stable.

The 27-year-old suspect lives in St. Gallen. Police said that the motive of the attack is still unclear. The attack was recorded on the train’s surveillance video.

The video shows the suspect armed with a knife and pouring flammable liquid on passengers. He then ignited the liquid and injured himself as well as others.

A witness at the scene pulled the attacker onto a platform, where he was injured. About 90 members of the police, fire and ambulance services arrived at the scene to assist the victims.

Police urged all passengers on the train to come to the police station to issue statements.
