A man was jailed for many years after maintaining his innocence and refusing a plea deal.

Raymond Lindsey Jr., 46, of Texas, who was accused of assaulting a public servant and threatening to kill police officers, could have walked out of court a free man.

However, after rejecting a plea bargain, he was convicted of the charges and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

His lawyer, Willis Everett Smith, said that he never had a client turn down such a great plea deal offer in his 30 years in the business.

Lindsey had already spent 19 months behind bars since his arrest for slamming an apartment door on one officer, threatened to kill several others and breaking items in his home while officers were investigating a domestic dispute between Lindsey and his girlfriend.

His plea deal would have allowed him to be released immediately with “time served.” However, Smith said that his client did not want to plead guilty and he believes that everyone had conspired against him.

Assistant District Attorney Philip Teissier presented evidence during the trial that showed Lindsey being aggressive while officers waited for Lindsey’s girlfriend to collect her belongings so she can leave the apartment.

Lindsey, who had a long criminal history prior to moving to Texas, hurt one officer and threatened to kill the others before he destroyed many objects inside the apartment, including a glass coffee table, flat-screen TV, entertainment center and a bird cage with a live bird inside.
