A restaurant in Spain, announced that it began adding surcharges to customers who were rude to its employees in order to improve politeness.
41-year-old Marisel Valencia Madrid, who is the owner of the Restaurante Blau Grifeu in Girona, said that the surcharges have worked and the politeness of his customers have improved.
Madrid charges customers who say please and wish waitresses good morning, just 1.30 euro ($1.12) for their coffee. Those customers who are not rude, are charged 3 euros ($3.35) for a coffee, but rude customers are charged 5 euros ($5.58).
Madrid introduced the surcharges after observing that her customers were rushing and forgot to say please when asking for their coffee.
Madrid who is originally from Colombia, said that people in her native country are much more polite that those in Spain.
The surcharges are explained in a poster outside of the restaurant so customers know beforehand to be polite to get a steep discount.
