(Scroll down for video) The owner of a daycare facility was arrested on a charge of manslaughter after allegedly killing a baby by feeding him a lethal amount of an antihistamine drug, according to police in Connecticut.
Fairfield police said that they have arrested 53-year-old Carol Cardillo, who is the owner of an unlicensed daycare facility, after being accused of killing 4-month-old Adam Seagull.
Cardillo was charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a minor. She was booked into jail, and her bail was set at $250,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Seagull’s death was initially ruled as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
This week, toxicology reports revealed that the baby had a lethal amount of diphenhydramine, which is the active ingredient in Benadryl, in his body.
An autopsy concluded that the baby died of acute diphenhydramine poisoning.
Cardillo had been running the unlicensed daycare in her home for 11 years, and she bought about 90 bottles of allergy medication over a period of three years.
Police believe that she may have administered Benadryl to other children.
Update: Cardillo pleaded no contest to second-degree manslaughter.
Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin will sentence her to up to 5 years in prison.
