(Scroll down for video) An elderly man died after his bladder exploded and his lungs collapsed from having oxygen pumped into his internal organs, according to police in Australia.

72-year-old Steve Herczeg, who was a popular soccer player, was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, following a fall.

He was suffering from hallucinations and from a urinary tract infection.

A catheter was inserted into his bladder before being moved to the respiratory ward, where he was connected to an oxygen tank to help with his breathing.

Herczeg was listed in stable condition before he began having extreme pain. Doctors ran into his room, but they were unable to revive him.

An autopsy revealed that a nurse connected the oxygen supply to the bladder catheter, pumping air into his organ. After a few minutes, his bladder exploded and his lungs collapsed.

A court was told that although Herczeg was suffering from respiratory problems, such a mix up would have killed a healthy person.

So far, no charges have been filed.
