A young woman was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly dismembering her newborn son and trying to flush him down a toilet, according to police in Washington DC.

24-year-old Lillian Alvarado, who lives in the 6000 block of 14th Street NW, killed her newborn son in the bathroom of her home after concealing her pregnancy from her friends and family.

Alvarado has been charged with first-degree murder while armed and first-degree cruelty to children. If convicted, she faces a sentence of up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to the criminal complaint, Alvarado delivered a baby in the bathtub of her family apartment.

She did not tell anyone that she was pregnant, and when the baby was born alive, she strangled him, tried to drown him and cut off his legs.

The child died of asphyxiation and dismemberment. The baby's death was discovered when bloody water leaked from her bathtub into the apartment below.

Police responded and found the baby in the bathtub.
