Deadly clashes broke out between two tribes in Libya, after a monkey pulled off the head scarf of a young girl.

The clashes broke out began last week in Sabha, when a monkey that belonged to a store owner, attacked a group of school girls who were passing by.

When the monkey pulled off the scarf of a 12-year-old girl, several men from the Awlad Suleiman retaliated by killing three people from the Gaddadfa tribe as well as the monkey.

The following day, the violence escalated. The tribes used tanks, mortars and other heavy weapons, to attack one another. The city was completely shut down as a result of the clashes.

There were several attempts made by the tribal leaders to calm the fighting and set a ceasefire so that the bodies could be recovered, but they have so far failed.

On Sunday, the Sabha Medical Centre confirmed that 16 people have been killed in the fighting and about 50 were wounded, including women and children.
