(Scroll down for video) A mother is on the run after stealing items from a department store and leaving her daughter behind.
The mother of Michigan, was stopped by Kohl’s loss prevention officers in Saginaw County, where she was accused of shoplifting.
Instead of stopping and answering questions for the loss prevention officers, the 23-year-old mother ran out the store and left her 7-year-old daughter behind.
The mother ran towards her car and sped away. The woman then called a family member to go to Kohl's to pick up her daughter.
When police got to the scene, the girl's grandmother arrived. After confirming her identity and that of her daughter, the child was handed over to the grandmother's custody.
Police said that this is not the first time that the suspect was arrested for shoplifting. A court has now issued a warrant for the mother’s arrest.
Saginaw County Sheriff Lt. Mike Gomez said that the suspect was seen on store surveillance cameras going into a fitting room with merchandise, but coming out without anything.
Staff members checked the fitting room and found hangers, but no clothing. When they confronted the mother, she ran towards the door while holding the child’s hand.
The girl fell to the ground and she was dragged towards the exit. When loss prevention officers almost caught up with her, the mother let go of her daughter and ran out, leaving the child behind.
The mother now faces felony charges of child abuse and child neglect in addition to the shoplifting charge.
