A man was arrested on a charge of attempted murder after being accused of setting his girlfriend on fire because he wanted to burn her beautiful face, according to police in Italy.
Now, 42-year-old Paolo Pietropaolo of Pozzuoli, has been sentenced to serve 18 years in prison after being convicted of stalking, attempted forced abortion and attempted murder.
Prosecutors have only asked for a 15 year sentence, but the judge added three years because the motive of the attack against his pregnant girlfriend.
According to the criminal complaint, Pietropaolo and 38-year-old Carla Caiazzo lived together for several years.
Caiazzo became pregnant, and during her eighth month of pregnancy, a fight broke out between them. Pietropaolo poured gasoline on his girlfriend and set her on fire.
He then fled from the scene. A neighbor who heard a commotion, rushed over to the scene and extinguished the flames.
Caiazzo was rushed to a hospital, where she had 21 surgeries to treat burns on 50 percent of her body. Miraculously, doctors were able to deliver her baby.
The 9-month-old girl, Giulia Pia, is said to be in good condition.
During questioning, Pietropaolo told police that he had no intention to kill his girlfriend. Pietropaolo revealed that he wanted to burn her face because it was too beautiful.
Pietropaolo became angry after another man asked her out on a date. The court banned Pietropaolo from having any contact with his daughter Pia.
He was also ordered to pay Caiazzo $225,000 in compensation and $50,000 to his daughter.
