Police are looking for a mother who abandoned her baby in a taxi in South Africa.
The newborn baby was found hidden under the seat of a minibus that transports people from the town of Pinetown to the Pavilion Shopping Center, which is about a half hour drive.
The driver was on his way back to the town when he suddenly heard the baby crying. He got scared and pulled over to the side of the road.
Zokuthula Ngcobo, who works as a nurse at the Westville Hospital, said that she was waiting for her ride home after her shift, when the horrified driver approached her and asked for help.
Ngcobo said that the newborn baby had a note from his mother, apologizing for abandoning him.
The note that was stapled to the baby’s shirt read: “I apologize for what I did, please forgive me. There is nothing I can do. The father denies the baby. I have no ID with me to apply for a grant. Please take good care of the baby or take him to the police.”
The nurse rushed the hungry baby to the trauma unit at Westville Life Hospital, where she works. The baby is now being cared for by the hospital until a home is found.
Ngcobo is looking into adopting the baby boy.
