(Scroll down for video) A man, who works as Santa Claus, was left traumatized after a young boy died in his arms.

Eric Schmitt-Matzen, 60, of Texas, said that he came home from work as a mechanical engineer when he received a call from a nurse at a hospital.

The nurse asked Schmitt-Matzen if he can rush over to the hospital, where he has been bringing cheers to many sick children.

Schmitt-Matzen agreed and came immediately. He was escorted into the room of a 5-year-old boy. The boy, who was terminally ill, had one wish, to meet Santa.

The boy’s mother handed Schmitt-Matzen a wrapped gift, which had a toy from the popular children’s show PAW Patrol, so Santa can hand it to her son.

Schmitt-Matzen, aka Santa Clause, walked to the boy’s bed in the Intensive Care Unit. He sat down next to the boy and spoke to him for a short time.

“What is this I hear about you are going to miss Christmas? There’s no way you can miss Christmas, you are my number one elf,” he said.

The little boy looked up at Santa Claus happily, and asked “I am?”

Schmitt-Matzen assured the child that he was, and then gave him the toy. The boy slowly removed the wrapping paper and flashed a big smile when he saw the toy.

The boy and Santa exchanged a few more words before the
boy sat up and gave him a hug.

He then uttered his last words “Santa, can you help me?”

“I wrapped my arms around him. Before I could say anything, he died right there,” a heartbroken Schmitt-Matzen said.

The boy’s mother, who was watching from outside, saw what happened and she came running inside while screaming.

Schmitt-Matzen said that he spent four years in the Army with the 75th Rangers, and he has seen his share of stuff, but this incident left him crying and unable to function properly as he thinks about the young boy all the time.

The 60-year-old man said that was so shaken by the experience that he considered hanging up his Santa suit for good. However, he made the decision to force himself to continue bringing cheers and make kids happy.
