The shooting occurred around 11:00 p.m. at the High Forest Apartments in Jasper.
Shelby Luttrell, 25, who works as a part-time Cordova police officer, was hospitalized at the UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
Cordova police spokesman T.J. Armstrong said that Luttrell, who is newly married, organized a surprise birthday party for his wife, who is the mother of his three children at their apartment.
One of their guests brought along an acquaintance to the party.
That acquaintance got into a fight with Luttrell, who was not armed at the time. The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, shot Luttrell and then fled the scene.
Luttrell underwent emergency surgery shortly after his arrival to the hospital.
Although things looked bad, doctors now believe that Luttrell will make a full recovery.
Police have since arrested the suspect.
