31 shoppers burn to death after explosion rocks crowded fireworks market

(Scroll down for video) An explosion rocked a crowded fireworks market, killing more than 30 shoppers and wounding close to 100 others, according to police in Mexico.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday in Tultepec.

So far, 31 people have been confirmed dead, including women and children. People from neighboring towns reported that they felt the ground shake as the fireworks exploded.

The series of explosions sent huge clouds of smoke into the sky.

47-year-old Eruviel Avila Villegas, who is the governor of the state of Mexico, confirmed that 72 people have suffered serious injuries.

Three injured children are expected to be transferred to a hospital in Galveston, Texas, for treatment of extreme burns.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. More than 80 percent of the fireworks booths at the San Pablito market, were destroyed as a result of the explosion.
