A teenage girl who was forced to sleep alone in a shed because she had her period, died due to a lack of oxygen, according to police in Nepal.

Achham police said that 15-year-old Roshani Tiruwa, died overnight on Saturday, after she lit a fire in the shed to keep herself warm.

Since the shed was not well ventilated, the fire sucked out the oxygen, leaving the girl gasping for air. When her father went to check on his daughter on Sunday morning, she was already dead.

According to the police investigation, Tiruwa ate dinner on Saturday around 6:00 p.m. After eating dinner with her family, she was forced out of the house and into a shed because she had her period.

Some women do not sleep in their home when they have their periods. Although forcing a woman to leave the house during her period is illegal, no charges have been filed.
