New technology allows consumers to control phone through eye movement

Consumers who want to keep up with the newest technology can now get a phone with an app that can read its owner’s eye movement.

GazeCapture allows smartphone users to play games and open apps using just eye movements.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Georgia and Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Germany, have been able to train software to identify where a person is looking with an accuracy of about one centimeter on a mobile phone and 1.7 centimeter on a tablet.

The researchers believe that the software’s accuracy will improve with more data.
To accomplish this, the researchers created an application called GazeCapture that collects data about how people look at their phones in different environments outside the confines of a laboratory.

The app asks smartphone owners to look at the screen and directs them to look right and left. The information is then used to train GazeCapture.

The software takes into account factors such as the position and orientation of the head and eyes to figure out where the gaze is focused on the screen.

About 1,500 people have used the GazeCapture app so far.

When the app will record data from 10,000 people, it will be able to reduce the error rate to half a centimeter, which should be good enough for a range of eye-tracking applications.

An elderly man is lucky to be alive after falling into a well that was filled with cold water and snakes, according to firefighters in Maine.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Tremont Fire and EMS were called to a property on a report of a 71-year-old man who had fallen into a well.

He was inspecting the water level with a piece of wood, but lost it down the hole.

While attempting to retrieve the wood, he slipped into the 18 inch opening and became trapped inside the 8 feet deep concrete chamber.

He screamed for about 30 minutes, until his wife heard his calls for help.

Neighbors were quick to assist emergency responders as they lowered him a life jacket and directed the emergency crew to the man's location.

A 200 pound outer concrete cover was removed, allowing access to the second 18 inch entry hole below. It was quickly determined that man was having difficulty staying above the water.

Tremont Fire Captain Heath Higgins lowered himself into the well to keep the man's head above the water. Without hesitation, Deputy Sheriff McFarland and Steve Ward pulled the man out as Captain Higgins pushed from below.

A very wet but thankful and smiling man emerged from the dark chamber. As Captain Higgins entered the well, he quickly discovered that he and the victim were not alone.

There were numerous live snakes in the water.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he treated for minor injuries and released.

New shampoo bottles empties itself to the last drop

Shampoo bottles (illustration)
By: Wayne Morin

(Scroll down for video) People who hate leaving behind drops of shampoo in nearly empty bottles, will soon be able to purchase plastic shampoo bottles that empty themselves to the last drop.

Researchers at the Ohio State University, have developed a new coating for plastic bottles to make soap products flow freely from the inside.

The new patent-pending technology restricts the soap from touching the inside of the bottle. The researchers developed the structure using nanoparticles, which do not stick to soap.

The development is part of a project to create a shampoo bottle that is efficient and environmentally friendly. The researchers hope to license the coating technique to manufacturers for other bottled plastic products.

The method has already been applied to polycarbonate, a plastic used in car headlights and cases of smartphones, among other applications.
