Christine Garcia
By: Mahesh Sarin

A police officer was shunned by the people whose lives she made better.

The transgender California police officer has been honored by several organizations and they praised her work within the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) community.

However, she was ordered to leave an LGBTQ event, which she helped organize, for fear that the uniform might upset other transgender people who were attending the event.

San Diego Police Department Officer Christine Garcia helped plan the Transgender Remembrance Day, which honors those who lost their lives for violence and hatred against transgender people.

When she tried to enter the event as a member of the LGBTQ community, Garcia was asked to leave because she wore her uniform.

Garcia, who made the transition last year, was also part of the police security department that oversaw the march during the annual event.

She is also a liaison between the LGBTQ community and police.

After the march, Garcia went to participate in a program, which was held at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, but she was told that she cannot enter because her police uniform could upset other participants.

City commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez, a long-time LGBTQ activist, called the incident an outrage.

“Any officer, whether gay or straight, should be welcomed in our community center in uniform. They protect our community and neighborhoods, and make San Diego a better place,” she said.

The center's leaders also apologized to Garcia and to the head of the police department after learning about the incident.
