A police officer betrayed the trust of the public be engaging in a sexual relationship with a rape victim, according to police in the United Kingdom.
Charlotte Peters, 33, from Luton, has been charged with one count of misconduct in public office.
Peters appeared before the Southwark Crown Court, where she has been sentenced to 22 months in prison after admitting to having an inappropriate relationship with a victim of crime.
The court heard that Peters, who was an officer within the Met's Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, was assigned to a rape investigation, and after that, she began a relationship with the victim.
This subsequently came to the attention of the police, and officers from the Directorate of Professional Standards Specialist Investigations team launched an investigation.
"The public and the MET expect police officers to behave with the utmost professionalism. It was PC Peters' job to protect those she was entrusted to help.
“She clearly abused her position by starting a relationship with the person she was supposed to support, when that person was at their most vulnerable.
"Such behavior only damages the public's trust and confidence in the police and is completely unacceptable,” Temporary Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Martin said.
Peters was suspended from duty. According to the police investigation, Peters first kissed the woman in a shelter. The pair then had consensual sex four times in less than a month, including once in the toilets at McDonald's.
Peters was on duty during one of the encounters. The victim described being in love with Peters.
When the victim realize that Peters was never going to leave her girlfriend and was tired of being her dirty little secret, she told someone at the shelter about the relationship.
Peters asked the woman to erase the text messages they had exchanged and threatened to commit suicide when the relationship was revealed.
