(Scroll down for video) A brave teenager helped his parents’ marriage get back on track after his father refused to talk for 20 years.

Otou Katayama of Japan, finally spoke to his wife for the first time in 20 years, after getting into a bad mood over something she said that upset him.

Otou continued living with his wife Yumi and their three children, who are now all grown up.

During the years, Yumi desperately tried to get her husband to talk to her and to help ease her concerns with their children. However, he never responded with more than a nod or grunt, she said.

The couple’s 18-year-old son Yoshiki, finally decided to intervene and break his father’s silence.

He contacted a television show and asked for help. Yoshiki said that he never heard his parents having a conversation.

The producers arranged for the couple to meet in a park, where they had their first date and the cameras were rolling as Otou uttered his first words to his long suffering wife.

The couple’s two daughters and their son sat on side and they cried as they watched their parents talking for the first time in 20 years.

Otou began by saying: “Somehow it’s been quite a while since the two of us talked.”

“I know,” his wife replied, while waiting for him to say more.

“You were so concerned about the kids. Yumi, up until now, you have endured a lot of hardship. I want you to know I’m grateful for everything,” he added.

“I am so very thankful,” Yumi replied.

Otou then told his wife that after this, he wants to talk more. “I hope we can work together,” he added.

Otou reportedly later admitted that he “was kind of jealous of the attention the children were getting.”
