(Scroll down for video) A boy was often mistaken for a girl as he let his hair grow long enough so he can donate it to his friend.

10-year-old Tyler Boone of Georgia, did not care about being teased over his long hair because he did it to help his close friend, 12-year-old Gabby Ruiz.

Ruiz suffers from alopecia, which is an autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out.

Boone wanted to do something to help his friend and to make her life better. Two years ago, he stopped getting haircuts and allowed his hair to grow long.

Recently, Boone reached the length needed to make a wig for Ruiz, who is a longtime family friend.

Boone and Ruiz met when they were much younger and they have remained friends despite living hundreds of miles apart.

Boone, Ruiz and their families met at the JCPenney store at the Westfield Brandon Mall in Florida, where they took a photoshoot together.

Ruiz had the honor of cutting off Boone’s 12-inch ponytail, which is going to be sent to the nonprofit Children with Hair Loss, so they can make a wig just for Ruiz.

When they were done, Boone went to get a haircut. He chose a buzz-cut, which made him look like a different person. Boone had a huge smile as he touched his head and said “it feels so different.”
